Growth

Growth is mastering all the your subtraction facts and having to work on multiplication facts...as a 2nd grader...in a Foundations 2 Special Education classroom...even if you don't want to have to work on multiplication because its something new and different.

Growth is not having to carry a bathroom bag (cute Dr. Seuss bag) to the bathroom because you now wear underwear.

Growth is going from being considered nonverbal to your teacher asking you to please be quiet. 

Growth is getting to run errands for your teacher because the adults can trust you to come back.

In my classroom growth is not always measured by the letter or number representing a reading level, how many math facts you can solve in two minutes or a score on a standardized test. 

What is in a name?

As I reflected on my past teacher blog, I decided it was time for a fresh approach.  That was the easy decision, the tougher decision was what to name this new blog.  "The view from Room 1" seemed like a good fit for a few reasons.  One, my new classroom doesn't have any windows besides the ones in the doors.  Also, I do enjoy the idea of being room 1, has a nice ring to it! :)

Like life, teaching is all about your perspective.  As a special education teacher for students with significant intellectual disabilities, perspective is what you make of it.  I have the coolest seven students that I know and seeing what they can accomplish each and every day is a blast!  What you see at first glance does not represent what you will see if you truly stop and enjoy the moment.
